As usual, after the various parades, elections, concerts and other carnival events that have taken place throughout the country in recent weeks, all the provinces will be gathering in the capital for the national carnival.

The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Culture has announced that the great celebration of the 2024 Carnival Parade will take place on Sunday March 17 on George Washington Avenue in Santo Domingo.

The announcement was made on February 20 at a press conference held at the School of Fine Arts.

The Minister of Culture, Milagros Germán, announced that this edition of the country’s most important popular festival would be dedicated to the province of San Cristobal, “a recognition due to the richness of its cultural heritage and the fact that it has a booming carnival, which has earned it numerous awards in last editions of this popular festival”.

The parade of comparsas and carnival characters will start from 2:00 pm on Santo Domingo’s Malecon, from Presidente Vicini Burgos Street (obelisco macho) to Máximo Gómez Avenue.

The Minister also revealed the identities of the King and Queen of Carnival ; artist and designer Luis Rivas and broadcaster Jatnna Tavárez, who were crowned during this ceremony.

In addition, MINC awarded the Felipe Abreu Award for Merit in the Dominican Carnival 2024 to Juan Óscar Souffront Rodríguez (Yanco), who was chosen for “his invaluable contribution to the strengthening and projection of Dominican Carnival”.

The annual Luis Días 2024 Prize for unpublished musical works was awarded to : Yohansy Rodríguez, who won first place with the song “A la calle voy a parar”; Charlie Santana, who won second place with the song “Carnaval en RD”, and Fernando Cabrera, who won third place with “Carnaval, carnaval”.

Awards were also presented to the San Cristóbal City Hall, the Governor of San Cristóbal and the San Cristóbal Carnival Union (UCASANCRI) for their contribution to the development of the Dominican carnival.

The national carnival will benefit from a major security deployment – with national police and military forces, the Dominican Red Cross, the Santo Domingo fire department and the Civil Defense – so that all families can enjoy the best of the country’s different carnivals in a single event.
