The 12th Festival International de Jazz de Port-au-Prince begins

This Saturday, January 20 begins the 12th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Port-au-Prince (Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival). Until January 27, Haiti will be abuzz with rhythms by the great names in jazz. This annual event is now a must in the Haitian, Caribbean and world music landscape.

The event which is placed under the high patronage of the Ministry of Culture and Communication honors this year a country from South America, Brazil and Herbert nicknamed “Herby” Widmaier, the well-known singer, arranger, sound engineer, broadcaster, founder of Radio Métropole in 1970 and especially one of the pioneers of jazz in Haiti, died on April 27, 2017 at the age of 84 years.

During these eight days of festival, no less than 29 concerts will be scheduled in the capital but also in Jacmel, as for the closing show, it will take place on the Côte des Arcadins. A variety of renowned artists from eleven countries (USA, France, Switzerland, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Cuba, Spain, Belgium, Mexico, Chile) and Haiti will perform every evening on the various stages. Among them are: Brazilian singer and pianist Leila Pinheiro; American saxophonist, Kenny Garrett; Cuban saxophonist, Felipe Lamoglia; Cuban pianist, Marialy Pacheco; German trumpeter, Joo Kraus; Chilean guitarist, Nicolas Vera; American guitarist, Norman Brown; French bassist, Dominique Di Piazza; Haitian singer and guitarist, Beethova Obas; Haitian singer, Rutshelle Guillaume; Haitian pianist, Reginald Policard…

The 12th Festival International de Jazz de Port-au-Prince received support from several international partners including a dozen foreign embassies and institutions.
