Stephen “Cat” Coore passed away suddenly (1956 – 2026)

The pioneering Jamaican guitarist and cellist Stephen “Cat” Coore passed away suddenly on Sunday evening at the age of 69. Born April 6, 1956, Coore began his musical journey early, joining Inner Circle as lead guitarist at just 13 before co-founding Third World in 1973, one of Jamaica’s most enduring and influential bands.

With Third World, he helped shape a sound that fused reggae with pop, soul, funk, and rock, reaching audiences worldwide through songs including “1865 (96° In The Shade)”, “Now That We’ve Found Love”, “Reggae Ambassador”, and “Try Jah Love”. Awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican Government in 2005, Coore toured and recorded extensively, inspiring generations through his musicianship and vision.

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this time. (VP RECORDS, Planet Reggae)
